Diamond Color Explained: Choosing the Right Shade
From icy white to warmer tones, diamond color shapes the character of your stone. Learn how to choose the shade that suits you best.

Diamond Color Explained: Choosing the Right Shade
Most diamonds appear colorless - but small differences in color can have a big impact.
The Diamond Color Scale
Diamonds are graded from D to Z:
· D-F → colorless (‘icy’ look)
· G-H → near colorless
· I+ → (slight) yellow tint
Why Color Matters
Less color means more light reflection, resulting in:
· brighter appearance
· more brilliance
· higher value
What Should You Choose?
D-F offers the highest quality. G-H offers excellent value with minimal visible difference.
Why doesn’t diamond color grading start from A, but from D?
You might expect diamond color grading to start at the letter A - but in reality, it begins at D.
This isn’t random. Before the modern grading system existed, different jewelers used their own inconsistent scales, often starting at A, AA, or even AAA to describe top-quality diamonds. This created confusion and made it difficult to compare stones objectively.
To solve this, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) introduced a completely new and standardized system.
They intentionally started at D to clearly separate their scale from all previous, unreliable ones.
